1 The Eureka! Phenomenon There are some famous occasions when a historic figure has had a flash of inspiration, but I want to include also you and me. We puzzle for a while and then suddenly we see the answer: Ha! that's how it works! or perhaps That's what will fit! or just plain Got it! On any such occasion, pleasure is a part of what one feels. That pleasure is part of the motivation, too. The period of puzzling is not particularly enjoyable --- the reason we attack the puzzle in the first place may be because we expect to get pleasure at the end. Why do we bother with riddles or crossword puzzles? Partly because after solving one, there is a backward feeling of satisfaction, but also partly because we look forward to pleasure at some future moment of success.
